How to Know If a Sofa Is Good Quality
By Hector Morales, Furniture Quality and Practical Buying Specialist at SoBe Furniture
You can tell a lot about a sofa just by sitting on it. But knowing what to look for before you sit down is even better. In Boca Raton, where homes are beautiful, the climate is tough, and expectations are high, buying the wrong sofa is an expensive mistake. After years on the showroom floor, here is what I check every time.
Start With the Frame
The frame is the skeleton of the sofa. A good frame is made from kiln-dried hardwood, which resists warping and cracking over time. Softwood frames or particleboard might feel fine in the store but break down within a few years, especially with the humidity levels we get in South Florida.
The test: sit on the sofa and rock slightly side to side. A quality frame will not flex or creak. If you feel any give or hear any noise, the joinery is weak or the material is cheap. Dovetail and dowel joints are more durable than staples or glue alone.
For a sofa you expect to last a decade in a Boca Raton home, kiln-dried hardwood is the baseline. Not negotiable.
Check the Cushion Construction
Cushions tell the story of how a sofa will hold up after real use. There are three main types:
High-density foam: This is what quality sofas use. It holds its shape, supports your weight evenly, and does not bottom out after a year. Look for foam rated at 1.8 lbs per cubic foot or higher.
Low-density foam: Common in mass-market furniture. It feels soft initially but compresses permanently over time. You end up sitting into the frame within 18 to 24 months.
Foam with a fiber wrap or down blend: Adds a soft top layer over a supportive core. This combination gives you the plush look with long-term support underneath. Many of the Italian sofas we carry at SoBe use this construction.
Press firmly on the seat cushion and release. Quality foam springs back immediately and fully. If it takes a second or leaves a slow impression, the density is too low for everyday use.

Look at the Upholstery Up Close
Pattern alignment, stitching, and seam placement separate quality upholstery from cheap work. On a well-made sofa, patterns match at the seams, stitching is tight and even, and the fabric or leather wraps cleanly around corners without bunching or pulling.
For Florida homes specifically, fabric choice matters more than most people realize:
- Performance fabric: Engineered to resist staining, fading, and humidity. A practical choice for homes with pets, kids, or direct sunlight.
- Top-grain leather: Durable, ages beautifully, and easy to clean. Holds up well in air-conditioned Boca Raton homes. Avoid bonded leather, which peels and cracks within a few years.
- Velvet and linen: Beautiful but more demanding in South Florida. Works well in climate-controlled rooms with minimal humidity exposure.
Run your hand firmly across the fabric. Quality upholstery stays smooth and taut. Cheap fabric puckers or shifts under pressure.
Examine the Legs and Base
Sofa legs are often overlooked but they matter. Solid wood or metal legs are a sign of quality. Plastic legs on a sofa priced over a thousand dollars is a red flag. The legs should be attached directly to the frame, not screwed into a separate block that can work loose over time.
Lift one corner of the sofa slightly. A quality sofa feels solid and heavy. A lightweight sofa almost always means a lightweight frame inside.
Ask About the Suspension System
Underneath those cushions is a suspension system that supports the entire seating surface. The two most common types:
Sinuous springs (S-springs): A series of S-shaped metal wires running front to back. Common and acceptable in well-made sofas. Should feel springy and even across the entire seat.
Eight-way hand-tied springs: The traditional benchmark of high-end sofa construction. Each coil spring is tied in eight directions to the frame, creating a more consistent and durable support surface. Found in premium sofas and Italian-made pieces.
Press down across different areas of the seat. You should feel consistent support from side to side. Soft spots or dead zones indicate failing springs or a weak suspension.
What the Price Actually Tells You
A quality sofa made with a hardwood frame, high-density foam, and durable upholstery has real material and labor cost. In the Boca Raton market, you are generally looking at $1,800 and up for a sofa that will hold up over five to ten years of daily use.
The trap is mid-range pricing on low-quality materials. A $900 sofa that looks similar to a $2,500 sofa is almost never the same underneath. The frame is lighter, the foam is softer, and the upholstery fabric will show wear within a year or two. We see it constantly on the trade-in market.
At SoBe Furniture, we only carry pieces that meet a quality standard worth putting in a Boca Raton home. Every sofa on our floor can be examined in person so you can apply these tests yourself before you buy.
What wood is used in quality sofa frames?
Kiln-dried hardwood is the standard for quality sofas. It resists warping and cracking over time. Softwood, plywood, or particleboard frames are common in lower-priced furniture and typically break down faster, especially in humid climates like South Florida.
How do I test sofa cushion quality in a store?
Press firmly into the seat cushion and release. High-density foam springs back immediately and fully. Low-density foam takes a moment to recover or leaves a slow impression. Also sit on the sofa for a few minutes and notice whether you feel the frame underneath you.
Is leather or fabric better for a Florida home?
Both work well if you choose the right type. Top-grain leather is durable and easy to clean in an air-conditioned home. Performance fabrics engineered for stain and fade resistance are a strong choice for homes with pets, children, or high sun exposure. Avoid bonded leather, which peels and cracks in warm conditions.
What does eight-way hand-tied mean?
It refers to the suspension system inside the sofa. Each coil spring is individually tied in eight directions to the frame, creating a durable and evenly supported seat surface. It is a traditional marker of high-end sofa construction and is common in Italian-made furniture.
How heavy should a quality sofa be?
A solid hardwood frame makes a sofa noticeably heavier than one built with softwood or engineered wood. If you can lift one corner of a full sofa easily with one hand, the frame is likely lightweight. Density in the frame is a good sign.
