Caring for Rugs, Pillows and Decor in a Humid South Florida Home
By Hector Morales, Furniture Quality and Practical Buying Specialist at SoBe Furniture
The furniture in a South Florida home gets most of the attention, but the soft goods and accessories are what age fastest. A velvet pillow by the window turns two shades lighter on one side. A down insert goes flat and smells faintly damp after a stormy week with the AC set high. A wool rug picks up a gray path from beach sand. A metal bowl on the lanai table starts to look dull from salt air.
None of that is a product failure. It is what humidity, sun and salt do to textiles and finishes when nobody adjusts the routine for our climate. In Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach and along the coast in Highland Beach, the air carries more moisture and more salt than in most of the country, and impact windows let in more light than people expect.
The good news is that a few habits keep rugs, pillows and decor looking new for years. This guide covers the routine we recommend, piece by piece, and how to choose materials that suit the room before you buy.
The Five Habits That Protect Soft Goods in a Humid Home
1. Keep the air steady
Humidity is the root of most problems with textiles here. Run the AC consistently, even when you travel, rather than shutting it off for a week. Wide swings in indoor humidity are what let down inserts clump, wool rugs smell musty and rug pads hold moisture. Seasonal residents in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale should leave the system on a moderate setting while they are away.
2. Respect the sun, even behind impact glass
Impact windows cut much of the UV, but not all of it, and visible light and heat still fade dyes over time. Saturated colors such as teal, navy, rust and olive show it first. Use sheers or shades during the strongest afternoon hours, and do not let one pillow or one corner of a rug sit in the same patch of sun every day.
3. Rotate everything
Flip and swap pillows between the sofa ends every week or two. Turn rugs a half turn every few months. Move decor bowls and trays occasionally so the surface under them, and the pieces themselves, age evenly.
4. Read the care label on every cover
Pillow covers are not all cleaned the same way, even within one fabric family. Some are spot clean only, some are dry clean only, and a few can be machine washed. Following the label is the single easiest way to keep a cover looking like new.
5. Deal with spills and sand the same day
Blot spills right away with a clean white cloth, working from the outside in. Vacuum entry rugs often during beach season, because sand works into fibers and grinds them down. Moisture or grit left overnight is what does the damage.
Pillow Covers: Velvet, Wool, Leather and Woven
Our pillow collection now includes 79 designs, from $99 to $269 per pillow, in 18", 20" and 22" squares plus lumbars. Every one comes with a down insert. The textures vary widely, so care does too. Color is the other half of the decision: a teal or olive cover reads differently against real upholstery in daylight, so bring a photo of your sofa, or pick pillows with our design team next to the sofa you are testing in the showroom.
Cotton velvet
Velvet is the richest look on a sofa and the one that shows sun and pressure first. The Velluto Deep Teal Cotton Velvet Pillow, from $99, has a soft, matte sheen and is dry clean only. The Olivo Olive Velvet Pillow, from $139, finished with a self piping, is spot clean. Brush velvet gently along the nap with a soft brush to lift crushed areas, keep it out of direct afternoon sun, and blot spills rather than rubbing, which can flatten the pile.
Wool and wool blends
Wool covers bring warmth and texture to a white sofa or a bed. The Terra Ivory Textured Wool Pillow, a cotton and wool weave with flecks of gray and taupe, is spot clean. The Nordi Ivory Heathered Wool Pillow, also cotton and wool, is one of the few with a machine-washable cover, following its care label. Wool resists soiling well, but keep it dry; a damp wool cover in a humid room takes a long time to air out.
Leather accents and hair-on hide
Pillows such as the Navarro Hair-On Hide Chevron Pillow, from $269, and the Cuoio leather and woven lumbars add a natural material that pairs well with leather sofas. Keep hide and leather out of standing water, wipe dust with a dry cloth, and brush hair-on hide in the direction of the hair.
Woven, kilim, linen and corduroy
Flat weaves such as the jute and wool Mesa Rust and Ivory Kilim Pillow are spot clean, and so is the Riga cotton and linen pinstripe. The Ola fringe stripes are dry clean only, because the fluffy fringe needs gentle handling. The Quarto corduroy covers, pieced in quarters so the ribs catch the light in four directions, are spot clean. Between cleanings, a soft brush or an upholstery attachment on low suction lifts dust and sand from textured weaves and corduroy ribs.
Down Inserts: Fluffing, Rotating and Keeping Them Dry
A down insert gives a pillow its soft, full shape, and it rewards a little attention.
Fluff daily, reshape weekly
Down compresses where you lean on it. Give each pillow a quick shake and plump when you tidy the room, and once a week remove the cover and work the insert with both hands so the down redistributes evenly. A pillow that looks flat often just needs this.
Air it out, but not in the sun
In humid weather, down can feel heavy and lose loft. Air inserts in a dry, air-conditioned room rather than outdoors, and avoid long sessions in direct sun, which can stress the fabric shell. Never put a damp insert back into a cover.
Rotate positions
The pillows at the sofa ends take the most leaning. Swap them with the center pillows every couple of weeks so all of them wear and compress at the same rate.
Wool Rug and Cowhide Care
Rugs carry the heaviest load in a tile-floored home, and each type needs its own routine.
Hand-knotted wool
The Venato Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, from $1,399, is 75% wool and 25% rayon, and it is professional cleaning only. Vacuum it weekly without a beater bar, blot spills immediately, and keep a rug pad underneath so air moves and the rug does not slide. The rayon gives the veining its luster, which is exactly why it should not be soaked or scrubbed at home.
Hand-tufted blends
The Mosaico hand-tufted rug, a viscose and wool blend, should never sit wet. Its pile is held by a backing, so blot fast, dry the area quickly with a fan, and keep it on a non-slip pad. Expect some early shedding that vacuums away.
Cowhide
Our cowhide rugs are the easiest of all. Shake them outside or vacuum on low suction, blot spills, and brush with the hair. Keep them away from steam and standing water, and rotate them so natural hides do not lighten unevenly in the sun.
Metal, Ceramic and Wood Decor Near Salt Air
Salt air reaches well inland from the Intracoastal, and it is hardest on metal finishes.
Cast aluminum: Fiamma
The Fiamma bowls, from $499, are cast in aluminum and pair black or silver with gold, including a long, low boat-shaped set for a dining table or buffet. Aluminum handles our climate well indoors. Dust with a soft dry cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners on the gold, and keep them inside rather than on an open balcony.
Outdoor-safe ceramic: Laguna
The Laguna bowls, $299 in brown or teal glaze, are rated outdoor safe, so they also work on a covered patio table. Rinse off salt residue now and then and dry them so water spots do not dull the glaze.
Iron, stone and wood
The Titan sculptural bowls, $799, are cast in iron and set on a marble or granite base, and the Perla trays, $399 for the set of two, are wood with an inlaid base. Keep both indoors, dust them dry, and do not leave wet glasses on the trays. Browse the full range in our decor collection.
Choosing What Lasts: Condo by the Water vs Inland Home
In an oceanfront condo in Highland Beach or Fort Lauderdale, choose for sun and salt: wool, linen and woven pillow covers in lighter colors, cowhide or a dense patterned rug near the balcony, and ceramic or aluminum decor. In a newer home in Parkland, Lotus or Boca Bridges with steady AC and less direct salt exposure, velvet in deeper tones, leather accents and iron sculptural pieces are easy to live with. In an established home near Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club with pool traffic, choose washable or spot-clean covers for the family room.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean a velvet throw pillow cover?
Follow the label. Some of our cotton velvet covers are spot clean and some are dry clean only. Blot spills instead of rubbing, and brush the nap gently to lift crushed areas.
How do I keep down pillows from going flat in humidity?
Keep the AC running steadily, fluff the pillows daily, and reshape the inserts weekly out of their covers. Rotate end pillows with center pillows so they compress evenly, and never put a damp insert back into a cover.
Can I wash a wool rug at home?
Not a hand-knotted wool rug with a rayon accent like Venato, which is professional cleaning only. Vacuum it weekly without a beater bar, blot spills right away, and keep a rug pad underneath.
Which decor bowls can go outside on a patio?
The Laguna ceramic bowls are rated outdoor safe and work on a covered patio table. Keep the Fiamma aluminum, Titan iron and Perla wood pieces indoors.
