Console Table or Sofa Table? Length, Depth and Height Rules for Boca Raton Homes and Condos

By Hector Morales, Furniture Quality and Practical Buying Specialist at SoBe Furniture

A console table looks like the easiest piece in the house to buy. There are no cushions to test, no mechanism and no fabric to choose, so most people pick one from a photo in five minutes. Then it arrives. The top stands three inches above the sofa back and looks like a shelf someone forgot to hang. Or it is 20 inches deep in a condo entry and everyone turns sideways to get past it. Or it is so short against a long wall that it seems to be waiting for the rest of the furniture to show up.

These mistakes show quickly in South Florida. Condos in Highland Beach and Fort Lauderdale often have one narrow entry hall that runs straight into the living room. New homes in Boca Bridges and Parkland have great rooms where the sofa floats mid-floor, so its back is the first thing you see when you walk in. With snowbird season starting and holiday guests on the calendar, November is when a bare entry starts to bother people.

The fix is a tape measure and four numbers. Here is how I size a console or sofa table, using real dimensions from our console table collection, so you can walk into the showroom with the decision nearly made.

Console Table or Sofa Table: What Actually Changes

In modern furniture, the two names describe a location more than a product. A console table stands against a wall. A sofa table stands behind a sofa. Several pieces in our collection are described for both jobs, so the real question is what the piece will be measured against.

Against a wall, the wall and the walkway set the size, and you only see the front. Behind a floating sofa, the sofa sets the size, and the table is seen from the room side and from the ends. That is why a base that looks strong from every angle matters more there.

The Four Numbers That Decide Your Console or Sofa Table

Take these measurements before you look at a single finish. Across our collection, fixed-size consoles run from 43.5 to 80 inches long, 11 to 25 inches deep and 29 to 32 inches high, so the right size usually exists. The numbers tell you which one it is.

Number 1: Length, Two-Thirds to Three-Quarters

Aim for two-thirds to three-quarters of the wall section or sofa back the table sits against. A 72-inch entry wall works out to 48 to 54 inches, which is where the Sorrento at 54 inches belongs. A 96-inch sofa works out to 64 to 72 inches, which suits the Marbella at 71. A 65-inch wall between a door and a closet points to the Mint at 43.5 inches or the Marvel at 46.5.

For a sectional, measure only the run of sofa back the table will stand behind, not the whole L. A 120-inch run works out to 80 to 90 inches, the territory of the Norlan at 80 inches, a tempered glass console described for use behind a sofa or against a wall. One firm rule: a sofa table should never be longer than the sofa.

Number 2: Depth, Set by What the Top Has to Carry

Depth is a tradeoff between surface and floor. At 11 inches, the Silver Leaf Root console fits along a wall nothing else can use, but measure your lamp base before you plan on one. The Capri, at 75 inches long and 13 deep, gives you length without taking floor. The Sorrento, at 18 inches, is a more typical working surface. The Marbella, Onyx and Element are 20 inches deep, which suits a generous foyer or a large room but is too much for most condo halls.

Number 3: The Walkway, 36 Inches on Any Main Route

This is the number people skip. Measure the full width of the passage, subtract the depth of the table, and see what is left. On a main route, such as the front door to the living room, I want 36 inches. A 54-inch passage with the 18-inch-deep Sorrento leaves exactly that. A 48-inch hall allows a 12-inch top at most, so the Silver Leaf Root leaves 37 inches while the 14-inch-deep Mint leaves 34 and will feel tight every day.

Check door swings at the same time, including any coat closet. If a hall is 42 inches wide, the honest answer is no console at all. Hang art or a mirror instead. Behind a floating sofa the same math applies, measured from the back of the table to the next piece of furniture or wall.

Number 4: Height, Level With the Sofa Back or Just Below It

For a table behind a sofa, this number decides whether the pair reads as one piece or two. Measure the sofa back from the floor to the top of the frame, not to a loose pillow. The target is level with that line or up to two inches below it. An inch above is still fine. Two or three inches above starts to look like a ledge.

Most of our consoles stand 29 to 30 inches high. The Sorrento and Marbella are 30, and the Norlan is 29.5. A few run taller, like the Onyx and Element at 31 and the Pietra at 32. So a 30-inch sofa back pairs well with most of the collection, while a 28-inch back calls for a 29-inch piece such as the RoKa or the Marvel.

Three things throw this number off. Adjustable headrests change the back height, so measure them the way you use them. A rug under the sofa but not under the table raises one and not the other. And a reclining sofa needs room to move, so check how far the back travels before you put anything behind it.

How the Numbers Change by Type of Home

Condos and High-Rises

In Boca Raton, Highland Beach and Fort Lauderdale towers, depth comes first and length second. The Mint is all tempered glass, so it takes up little visual space in a short entry. If the condo also needs a dining table for the holidays, look at the Eric XL. Closed, it is a 47-inch console, 17.5 inches deep. Extended, it reaches 73 inches and seats 10. It is Italian made, in MDF with a melamine laminate.

New Construction Great Rooms

In Boca Bridges, Lotus and Parkland, the sofa often floats, so length comes first and the table has to hold up from across the room. The Marbella, with its sculpted walnut-tone pedestal base, is described for this spot behind a sectional. Scale is also hard to judge on a phone, so bring your room dimensions and photos and work through the length with our design team. If you want lamps on a floating sofa table, plan the power before you buy. A floor outlet near the sofa is the difference between a finished look and a cord across the tile.

Established Homes With Defined Foyers

In Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club, Delray Beach and Weston, a true foyer gives you a wall and a clear view straight on. Nobody has to squeeze past the piece here, so it can be a statement, like the Capri in matte travertine on its sphere-and-column bases. Measure the wall, keep the 36-inch path, and then choose for looks.

Materials That Make Sense in South Florida

An entry console in Boynton Beach sees sandy shoes, wet umbrellas, keys and hard morning sun.

Ceramic

This is my practical pick for a hard-working entry. The Sorrento, Trevi and Element all have ceramic tops, and as a material, ceramic does not absorb moisture the way natural stone can. The Sorrento and Trevi give you the look of travertine, and the Trevi adds a walnut veneer frame for warmth.

Natural Stone

Real stone brings organic texture and earthy tones of its own. The Pietra is solid beige travertine in a matte finish, and the Capri and RoKa are matte travertine marble. Stone can be porous, so use a tray under anything wet and blot spills quickly. Matte travertine also feels different under your hand from a travertine-look surface, a comparison worth making in person, so when you call ahead, ask which stone and stone-look pieces are out.

Glass, Metal and Wood

Tempered glass, as in the Mint and Norlan, keeps a narrow space feeling open, but it shows fingerprints and near the ocean it needs regular wiping. The Marvel is 100% stainless steel. Near open sliders, wipe any metal down from time to time, because salt air is hard on metal finishes. Keep wood and veneer out of long direct sun, since strong light changes wood tones over time.

Putting It to Work Before Delivery Day

Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for two days. If you clip the tape walking through with groceries, the table is too deep. Then take phone photos from the front door and from the far side of the room.

Long stone and glass tops also need a plan for getting in. Measure the elevator, the hall turns and the door, and check your building's rules on elevator reservations. Pieces in stock in our Florida warehouse can often reach you within days, so if you want the entry finished before holiday guests arrive, ask at the desk which consoles are in stock and schedule white-glove delivery before you leave. Within the South Florida tri-county area, delivery is the greater of $120 or 3% of the merchandise total.

Bring Your Four Numbers to the Boca Raton Showroom

A tape measure gets you close. It cannot tell you how a top feels under your hand, how a finish reads in real light or how much presence a long piece has in a full-size room. Bring your numbers and photos, and our design team will help you narrow the choice in one visit. Call ahead and we can tell you which pieces are on the floor, or send photos ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a sofa table be?

Aim for two-thirds to three-quarters of the length of the sofa back. A 96-inch sofa works best with a table of about 64 to 72 inches. A sofa table should never be longer than the sofa itself.

Should a sofa table be higher or lower than the sofa back?

Level with the sofa back or up to two inches below it looks most intentional, and an inch above is still fine. Measure to the top of the frame, not to a loose pillow.

How deep should a console table be for a narrow hallway?

Subtract 36 inches from the width of the hall, and the result is the deepest top to use on a main route. A 48-inch hall allows about 12 inches, which suits the 11-inch-deep Silver Leaf Root console. If the hall is much narrower, use art or a mirror instead.

What is the best console table material for a South Florida home?

For a busy entry, a ceramic top is the most practical choice. For a living room or foyer, natural travertine and marble bring texture and character, as long as you use a tray under anything wet.
