Extendable Dining Tables Before Thanksgiving: A Boca Raton Host's Countdown

By Frank Chacin, Creative Director at SoBe Furniture

Every fall we hear a version of the same story. Someone in Boca Raton has twelve people coming for Thanksgiving, a dining table that seats six, and about four weeks to fix it. They find the right extendable table online, then read the fine print: custom made to order, six to eight weeks. The math does not work, and the backup plan becomes a folding table pushed against the end of a good dining set.

The quieter version: a family in Delray Beach buys an extendable table that looks right in photos, opens it for the first time the night before the holiday, and discovers the chairs on one side hit the buffet, the leaves are in a closet across the house, and nobody can reach the kitchen without three guests standing up. The table extended. The room did not.

An extendable table is the smartest hosting piece a South Florida home can own, because it is right-sized for a Tuesday dinner and still opens up when the snowbirds are back and the family flies in. It only works if four things line up: the seating math, the leaf system, the clearance and the calendar. This guide covers all four, with Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2026, as the deadline.

The Five Numbers That Decide Whether an Extendable Table Works on Thanksgiving

Before style or finish, write down five numbers. If one is wrong, the table disappoints on the one night you bought it for.

1. Seats closed

Plan on about 24 inches of table edge per guest. A table around 70 inches long seats two per side plus one at each end, so six. The closed size should suit everyday life first; too long closed and the room feels like a banquet hall on a normal Wednesday.

2. Seats extended

Run the same rule on the extended length. At roughly 102 inches you get four per side plus the ends, which is ten. At roughly 111 inches, ten sit with more elbow room. Count your real guest list, including the kids who will not stay at the kids' table.

3. Leaf length and storage

The leaf is what turns six into ten, so know how many leaves there are, how long each is, and where they go when not in use. A leaf that lives across the house tends to stay there.

4. Clearance around the extended table

Allow at least 36 inches from the table edge to a wall or furniture so a guest can push back and stand. Where people walk behind seated guests, toward the kitchen or a slider, plan on 42 to 48 inches. Measure for the table extended, not closed.

5. Days until delivery

The number most people skip. A made-to-order table has a production window before delivery can even be scheduled. Count backward from the holiday, not forward from the day you start browsing.

Leaf Types and Where the Leaves Go

Extendable tables do not all work the same way, and the mechanism matters more on a holiday afternoon than in a photo.

Separate leaves that drop into the center

The top pulls apart, leaves go into the middle, and the top closes around them. The Vesta Custom Italian Porcelain Extendable Dining Table uses two leaves sized to the table: two 11 3/4 inch leaves on the 36 by 48 inch size, two 15 inch leaves on the 36 by 60, and two 19 3/4 inch leaves on the 40 by 72. Per its description, the 60 inch size stretches to 91 inches and the 72 inch size to 111 1/2 inches. Ask where the leaves store on any table you consider, and if they store separately, plan a dry, flat spot inside the home, not a garage that bakes all summer.

Revolving tops that open by rotation

The Atlas Travertine Extendable Modern Round Dining Table uses a revolving mechanism that opens its taupe travertine-style ceramic top from a 31 inch console to a 51 inch round. It can live against a wall in a condo breakfast area and become a round table when people arrive. A mechanism like this is worth operating with your own hands before you buy. Call ahead and we can tell you which extendables are on the showroom floor that week.

Pedestals versus corner legs

Where the base sits changes how many chairs fit. The Vesta stands on a V-shaped pedestal with no corner legs, so chairs slide in easily. The Brava Walnut Extendable Ceramic Dining Table uses two angled walnut-veneer pedestals, each notched with a V. When counting extended seats, check where the base lands so no guest straddles a leg.

Tops That Handle a South Florida Holiday Season

Hot dishes, red wine, cranberry sauce, candles, and in South Florida, humidity and bright sun through big sliding doors. Each top handles that differently.

Porcelain and ceramic

These are why so many Boca Raton and Parkland families have moved away from all-wood tables. The Vesta's Italian porcelain-on-glass top wipes clean while keeping the look of stone. The Volta Copper Extendable Ceramic Dining Table and the Brava carry ceramic tops in Matte Snow Carrara, Matte Natural Travertine or Black Italian ceramic, and both extend from 70.8 to 102.5 inches. The Atlas top is described as resisting scratches, stains and heat. For cleaning up after twelve people with a damp cloth, start here.

Glass

Glass keeps a room open, which matters in a Highland Beach condo where the view is the main event. The Vesta is also offered with white or taupe glass. Glass shows fingerprints and rings more than a matte surface, so plan a quick wipe after the meal and use trivets.

Wood veneer

Wood warms a white-tile Florida home, and the Vesta comes in walnut, white oak or birch veneer, with a boat shape on the 60 and 72 inch sizes. Use placemats and trivets on holiday nights, clean spills quickly, and keep it out of direct afternoon sun.

Finish is the decision photos get most wrong. Matte travertine-look ceramic, nero porcelain and walnut veneer read differently in a room than on a screen. Bring phone photos of your floor tile and kitchen cabinets to the showroom and judge the finishes beside them before you commit.

The Holiday Calendar: Made to Order or Ready Sooner

Thanksgiving, November 26

At the end of October, Thanksgiving is about four weeks out, and a custom made-to-order table is not realistic. Focus on extendables whose listings carry no made-to-order window, such as the Volta and the Brava, and call (561) 221-6111 to confirm availability and delivery timing before you plan the menu around a new table. Our in-stock Florida warehouse is what makes a short timeline possible when a piece is available.

December gatherings

For December dinners, a ready-to-deliver table is still the safer choice; lock in the table and the delivery date early in November.

Why the Vesta is a plan-ahead piece

The Vesta extendable is custom made to order in 6 to 8 weeks, according to its description. Ordered at the end of October, that window closes somewhere between early December and the days before Christmas, and delivery is scheduled after that. It suits the winter visiting season or next year's holidays, when you want exactly your size, top and base. The custom table gives you every choice; the ready table gives you the date.

Condo, New Construction and Established Homes

Coastal condos

In a Highland Beach or Boca Raton condo, dining often shares space with the living room. Measure the extended length plus 36 inches at each end against the floor plan. A round that opens from a console, like the Atlas, can decide whether you host at home or book a restaurant. Bring the plan from your building or a measured sketch to the showroom, and our design team can check the extended table against it while you are there.

New construction

Great rooms in Boca Bridges, Lotus and newer Weston communities have plenty of length, and the risk is a table that looks small. A table that opens to 102.5 inches, or the Ravenna Ceramic & Walnut Extension Dining Table at 95 to 142 inches, fills a long space properly.

Established homes

Older homes near Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club or in Boynton Beach often have a walled dining room with a buffet on one side. Subtract the buffet depth before you measure, and confirm chairs still pull out on that side at full extension.

Delivery and Setup Before the Guests Arrive

A porcelain or ceramic top is not something to unbox in a driveway. Our white-glove delivery brings it inside and into place in your dining room. Within the South Florida tri-county area, it is the greater of $120 or 3% of the merchandise total; outside South Florida, delivery is quoted through a third-party service, so call for a quote before ordering.

Book delivery several days before the holiday, not the day before, so you can open the table to full length, practice the leaves and check the chair count. You can schedule delivery at the desk the day you choose the table.

See Extendable Tables in Person at Our Boca Raton Showroom

An extendable table is a mechanism, a top and a seating plan at once, and two of those are hard to judge on a screen. Open an extendable yourself, feel how the leaves go in, see porcelain, ceramic and wood side by side, and sit in the chairs you are considering. Bring room measurements and a photo, and our design team can help check seating and clearance at full length. You can browse our rectangular dining tables before you come.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people does an extendable dining table seat?

Use about 24 inches of edge per guest. A table around 70 inches closed seats six, and at about 102 inches extended it seats roughly ten including the ends. Check where the base sits so no seat lands on a leg.

How much space do I need around an extended dining table?

Plan on at least 36 inches from the edge of the extended table to a wall or furniture. Where people walk behind seated guests, allow 42 to 48 inches.

Can I get a custom extendable dining table before Thanksgiving?

Probably not this year. The Vesta extendable is custom made to order in 6 to 8 weeks, and Thanksgiving is November 26, 2026. Look at extendables whose listings carry no made-to-order window, such as the Volta or Brava, and call (561) 221-6111 to confirm availability and delivery timing.

Which top is best for a dining table in South Florida?

Porcelain and ceramic are the easiest for hosting because they wipe clean. Glass keeps a room bright but shows fingerprints. Wood veneer adds warmth and does best with placemats, trivets and a spot out of direct sun.
