Extra Seats Without the Crowding: Accent Chairs, Benches and Ottomans for Boca Raton Hosts
By Thais Monteiro, Brazilian Lifestyle and Warm Modern Design Contributor at SoBe Furniture
November is when the guest list stops being theoretical. Your sister has booked her flight, friends from Delray Beach are coming for dessert, and a Boca Raton living room that seats four beautifully is about to hold nine. The usual fix is to carry in the dining chairs and line them up along the wall. By the second hour, two guests are perched in the walkway and whoever is carrying the coffee has to turn sideways to get through.
The opposite mistake is just as common. A host adds a pair of full-size lounge chairs for the holidays, and from January on the room feels like a waiting area. South Florida makes the balance harder, because our guests rarely come for one dinner. Family visits run from Thanksgiving into spring, snowbird friends stay for weeks, and many of our living rooms open to the kitchen, with sliding doors on one side and very little spare wall.
Brazilian hosts have a habit worth borrowing: there is always room for one more, and nobody moves the sofa to make it happen. The extra seats are already in the room, doing another job until they are needed. A well-chosen accent chair, bench or ottoman can work the same way and still look right in the quiet weeks.
The Five Rules That Decide Whether Extra Seats Crowd the Room
Before you choose a fabric or a color, run the room through these five checks with a tape measure and a roll of painter's tape.
Rule 1: Protect the Walkways First
Mark the routes people actually use: front door to sofa, kitchen to living room, living room to terrace. As a planning guide, keep about 30 to 36 inches open on those main paths, and leave 16 to 18 inches between a seat and the coffee table so knees and drinks both have a place. Tape the outline of any new piece on the floor and live with it for a day. If you keep stepping around the tape, the piece is wrong for that spot.
Rule 2: Depth Matters More Than Width
People shop by width, but depth is what eats a walkway. Compare two Italian swivel chairs. The i919 in fabric is 30 inches wide and 27 inches deep, while the i456 in fabric is 34 inches wide and 34 deep. Seven inches of depth can decide whether a chair sits comfortably beside a sofa or pushes into the path to the kitchen. Benches are the extreme case. The ones in our line with a listed depth run 15 to 18 inches, which is why they slip into places a chair never could.
Rule 3: Give Every Seat a Second Job
A piece that only matters three weekends a year starts to look like storage. Decide what it does on an ordinary Tuesday. A bench under the window can hold books and a basket, a terrace ottoman can carry a tray, and a swivel chair can be your reading seat.
Rule 4: Keep the Visual Weight Low
A room feels crowded long before it runs out of floor. Solid pieces that sit directly on the ground block the eye, while pieces on legs let you see the floor continue underneath. A good mix is one rounded, generous chair for comfort, with everything else raised on slim legs or open frames.
Rule 5: Turn Seats Toward People, Not Walls
Conversation gets difficult once guests sit more than about eight feet apart, or when they have to twist to see each other. Swivel solves this. One chair can face the sofa during drinks, the terrace at sunset and the television for the game, and nobody has to drag anything across the floor.
What Each Type of Extra Seat Does Best
The Swivel Accent Chair: Your Most Comfortable Extra Seat
If you have space for only one addition, start here. The i919 turns a full 360 degrees on a slim black base, and its open-back shell, with a cut-out between back and seat, keeps the silhouette light in a smaller room. The i456 is the softer choice, with a low wraparound back and a deep drum seat. Its memory swivel suits a host: when a guest stands up, the chair returns to its original position, so the room always looks set. That return is something to feel for yourself, so call ahead and we can tell you which swivel chairs are on the floor. Both are made in Italy, and both can be custom ordered in other fabrics and leathers. You can compare more shapes in our accent chair collection.
The Bench: Two Seats in a Narrow Footprint
Allow about 22 inches per adult as a planning number. The Elenora bench is custom made in two widths: 44 inches for two guests, or 59 inches for two with room to spare and three close friends when needed. Its padded seat, gently rounded corners and slim tapered wood legs keep it warm and light, and its neutral upholstery goes easily with what you already own. Place one under a window, behind a floating sofa, or across the end of a seating group.
The Ottoman and the Compact Perch: A Low Seat for the Last Guest
Every full house needs one small seat for the last guest to arrive. The ottomans in our catalog are outdoor pieces, so indoors that job goes to a compact bench. For a modern room, the Marvel single bench takes just 19.5 inches of width and 15 of depth. It is made of 100% stainless steel in an open, slatted form you can see through. There is no cushion, so treat it as a firm seat for a short visit rather than a long evening.
If your gatherings spill outside, the Haven Ottoman is made for the terrace. It measures 24 inches wide, 21 deep and 16 high, in woven olefin rope with a light gray cushion, and it works as a footrest, an extra seat or a low surface for a tray. It is a special-order piece and is not on the Boca Raton showroom floor: we confirm availability before you order and can arrange a viewing at our Miami warehouse by appointment, and its swatches are at the Boca Raton showroom.
Where the Extra Seats Go: Condo, New Build or Established Home
Boca Raton and Highland Beach Condos
Condo living rooms are often long and narrow, with the view at one end and the kitchen at the other. Protect the sightline to the water first. The low back of the i456 keeps the view open, but check its 34-inch depth against your walkway; where depth is tight, the 27-inch-deep i919 is the easier fit. A bench along the long wall then adds two seats while taking very little floor.
Parkland, Weston, Boca Bridges and Lotus Great Rooms
Newer homes have the opposite problem: a large open room where guests drift to the kitchen island. Add a pair of swivel chairs across from the sofa to close the circle, then run a 59-inch bench behind the sofa or along the edge of the rug. The group stays together, and the path to the pool stays open.
Established Homes Near Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club
Older Boca Raton homes tend to have defined rooms and more wall, so two chairs flanking a console work well, but door openings can be tighter. Measure the doorways as well as the room, and bring those numbers with you.
Fabrics That Can Handle a Full House in South Florida
Guest seats see more use than people expect: sunscreen, damp hair after the beach, grandchildren with crackers. No upholstery is immune, but some choices are more forgiving.
Textured wovens forgive more. A nubby or flecked weave tends to hide small marks and everyday wear better than a flat, single-tone surface. The light grey on the i919 and the light greige on the i456 are both textured wovens.
Soft neutrals are more forgiving than pure white. Greige, oatmeal and soft gray stay calm in strong Florida light and do not announce every mark. Direct sun through big windows is hard on any upholstery, so use sheers or shades on the brightest exposures.
Leather suits a seat that gets heavy use. It wipes down more easily than most fabrics and pairs well with a textured sofa. The i919 and i456 are both also available in leather.
None of this can be settled on a phone. A greige that looks neutral on your screen can lean warm or cool under real light, and a seat that looks fine in a picture may be difficult for an older parent to rise from. Come to the showroom with a photo of your sofa, compare tones in person, and sit down and stand up the way your guests will.
Getting New Seats Home Before Your Guests Arrive
Work backward from your first arrival date, which for many Boca Raton hosts is Thanksgiving week. Custom-made pieces, including the Elenora bench and any chair ordered in a different fabric or leather, follow their own schedule, as does the special-order Haven Ottoman, so ask about timing at the desk before you plan around a date. Pieces in stock at our Florida warehouse can usually be delivered within days. If you are in a condo in Boca Raton or Fort Lauderdale, check your building's rules for elevator reservations and delivery hours early, because holiday weeks fill up.
Within the South Florida tri-county area, our white-glove delivery is the greater of $120 or 3% of the merchandise total. Outside South Florida, delivery is quoted through a third-party service. You can schedule it at the desk, so the planning is finished in one visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I see accent chairs and benches in Boca Raton?
SoBe Furniture is at 6599 N Federal Highway in Boca Raton, on the west side of US-1 about a mile north of Yamato Road. We are open seven days a week. Call (561) 221-6111 ahead and we can tell you which pieces are on the floor.
How can I add seating to a small living room without crowding it?
Start with pieces that are shallow or raised on legs. A bench adds two seats in a narrow footprint, and one compact swivel chair can serve the sofa, the view and the television. Keep about 30 to 36 inches open on your main walkways, and tape the outline on the floor before you buy.
Is a bench or an accent chair better for extra guests?
A bench gives you more seats per inch of depth, while a chair gives one guest better back support for a long evening. Use the chair for comfort and the bench for capacity.
What upholstery works best for guest seating in South Florida?
Textured woven fabrics in soft neutrals are forgiving because they hide small marks and everyday wear. Leather is a strong choice for a seat that gets heavy use, since it wipes down easily.
Can an ottoman work as extra seating?
Yes, for short visits, as long as it is firm and stable at a comfortable height. The Haven Ottoman, for example, is 16 inches high and made for the terrace. For long evenings indoors, most guests will still prefer a seat with a back.
