How to Choose a Platform Bed in Boca Raton: Queen vs King & Height
The bedroom mistakes I see are almost never about taste. A client picks a platform bed they genuinely love, it goes into the room, and something is quietly wrong. The Four Numbers That Decide Whether a Platform Bed Works
Write these four down before you look at a single finish. Ten minutes with a tape measure prevents nearly every bedroom regret I hear about.
1. Queen or king: measure the walkways, not the bed
A queen mattress is sixty inches wide, a king is seventy-six, and that sixteen inches is the whole argument. It is settled by what is left at the sides, not by the photograph. Measure the room wall to wall, subtract the mattress width, and split the remainder between the two sides. You want roughly thirty inches of clear walkway on each side you use, enough to pass with folded laundry and open a nightstand drawer. Below about twenty-four inches, the room reads like a corridor even when the bed is beautiful.
Protect the walkway at the foot too, if that is the path to a bathroom or closet. In many Delray Beach and Boynton Beach condos, a queen leaves the room usable and a king does not. In a primary suite at Lotus or Boca Bridges, a king is often the only size proportionate to the wall behind it. The room decides, not the preference.
2. Headboard height: the ceiling sets the scale
Headboard height is the number most people never consider, and it decides whether the bed looks intentional. Under a standard eight or nine foot ceiling, a tall headboard fills the wall and anchors the room. Under the volume ceilings common in newer Parkland and Weston construction, a short headboard reads as undersized no matter how good the piece is.
A window behind the bed, common in coastal condos, caps how tall you can go before you block glass and light. If art or a fixture is already in place, measure from the floor to the bottom of it and leave breathing room. A split or two-piece headboard gives presence at the pillow line without a solid mass climbing the wall.
3. Platform height: where the top of your mattress lands
Platform beds sit lower than the frame-and-box-spring setups most of us grew up with, and that is the point. What matters is not the deck height alone but the finished height: floor to the top of your mattress once the mattress is on the platform. Sit on the edge and your feet should rest flat with your knees at roughly a right angle. Too low and getting up becomes work, which matters if anyone in the house thinks about a knee or a hip. Too high and the grounded silhouette you wanted disappears.
A thick mattress on a low platform can be perfect, while the same mattress on a higher deck leaves you perched. Bring your current mattress height with you, and tell us if you are replacing the mattress too.
4. Outside footprint: the number that actually has to fit
Mattress size is not bed size. A platform bed with an upholstered surround, a wide rail or a broad headboard takes noticeably more floor than the mattress inside it. Check the outside footprint, length and width, plus headboard depth against the wall, and remember that baseboard can hold a headboard an inch off it. Measure the path in as well: entry door, hallway turns, elevator car, stairwell landing. A bed that fits the room and cannot turn out of a service elevator in a Fort Lauderdale high-rise is still the wrong bed.
Why You Have to Lie On It Before You Buy
The numbers come from a tape measure. Everything that follows does not.
Lie down. Not sit, lie. Get on your back, roll onto the side you actually sleep on, and stay a couple of minutes. Sit up against the headboard the way you do when you read at night and find out whether it is comfortable to lean on or pushes your neck forward. Press your palm into the upholstery. Swing your legs off the edge and stand up the way you do at six in the morning.
Colour only resolves in person: a putty, a greige, a warm oak and a cool oak photograph as the same beige and look nothing alike under real light next to your own flooring, so bring a photo of that floor. Scale is the same story: stand beside a king with a real nightstand and you know instantly whether the pairing feels generous or crowded.
