How to Dress a Modern Bed: Pillow Formulas for King and Queen Beds
By Daniela Castillo, Client Experience Lead at SoBe Furniture
We see it in client photos every week. A beautiful modern bed, a carefully chosen headboard, good nightstands, and then the bed itself looks unfinished. Sometimes it is two flat sleeping pillows and nothing else. Sometimes it is nine pillows of every size, piled so high they hide the headboard the client spent weeks choosing. Both problems come from the same place: nobody ever explained how many pillows a bed needs, or what size they should be.
It matters more than it seems. The bed is the largest surface in the room, and in a Boca Raton primary suite with tall windows and bright morning light, it is the first thing you see when you walk in. Pillows are also where most of the color and texture in a modern bedroom lives, because the furniture itself is usually quiet: a padded headboard, a walnut or oak nightstand, a neutral dresser. Get the pillows right and the room looks designed. Get them wrong and even a custom bed looks unfinished.
The good news is that dressing a bed is a formula, not a talent. Here is the one our design team uses for king and queen beds, and how to adjust it to your headboard, your colors and the South Florida climate.
The Five Rules That Decide Whether a Bed Looks Finished
1. Start with the sleeping pillows
The pillows you actually sleep on are the base layer. On a king bed, that means two king-size sleeping pillows, or four if you like to stack them. On a queen, two queen or standard pillows. Put them in shams or cases that match your sheets or duvet, so they read as part of the bedding rather than part of the decoration.
2. Size the squares to the bed
Decorative squares should be large enough to read from the doorway. On a king, use 22-inch squares. On a queen, use 20-inch squares. An 18-inch pillow belongs on an accent chair or a bench at the foot of the bed; on a king it looks lost.
3. Use one lumbar, centered
A single long lumbar pillow in front of the squares ties the arrangement together. One is enough. Two or three lumbars in a row start to look like a sofa.
4. Let the headboard set the height
The top of your pillow arrangement should sit a few inches below the top of the headboard. If the pillows cover it, you lose the reason you bought the bed. Measure your headboard height from the mattress top before you plan the layers.
5. Repeat colors, vary textures
Choose two or three colors from the room, such as the wood of the nightstands, the color of the headboard and one accent, and repeat them. Then make sure no two pillows next to each other share the same texture. That is what makes a neutral bed look rich instead of flat.
Pillow Formulas for King and Queen Beds
With those rules in mind, here are the formulas we sketch for clients. All of the pillows mentioned below come from our pillow collection, which now has 79 designs, each with a down insert, in 18, 20 and 22-inch squares plus several lumbar sizes.
The king formula
Two or four king sleeping pillows, three 22-inch squares, and one long lumbar. Three 22-inch squares fill a king bed edge to edge without crowding it. For a calm, layered look, use two matching outer squares, such as the Nordi Ivory Heathered Wool Pillow, from $159, a heathered ivory wool with a black zigzag border at each end. Put a darker texture in the center, like the Quarto Charcoal Corduroy Pillow, from $129, where the ribs change direction across the face. Finish with the Sereno Ivory and Charcoal Lumbar Pillow, a 14 by 32-inch lumbar woven with raised ivory and charcoal bobbles, at $189.
The queen formula
Two queen sleeping pillows, two 20-inch squares, and one lumbar around 12 by 30 or 14 by 22 inches. On a queen, three squares usually crowd the bed, so two squares and a lumbar give a cleaner line. The Brina Ivory Wool Pillow with Charcoal Stripe, from $129, comes in 20-inch squares and in both a 12 by 30 and a 14 by 22 lumbar, so one design can carry the whole arrangement, with a single color pillow in front to break it up.
The minimal version
Some modern beds look best with less. If your headboard is low or very sculptural, skip the squares and use only the sleeping pillows plus one long lumbar. It looks deliberate and takes seconds to make each morning.
The guest room version
For a guest room in a Delray Beach or Boynton Beach home that is used a few weeks a year, two squares and one lumbar on a queen is plenty. Choose covers that are easy to care for. Several of our covers can be machine washed following their care label, while others are spot clean or dry clean only, so check the details on each product page.
Matching Pillows to Headboard Height
The headboard decides how tall your arrangement can be, and it is the most overlooked part of dressing a bed.
A tall padded headboard gives you room to stack. The SoBe Grand Custom Modern Platform Bed, from $5,499, runs its padded headboard past the nightstands for a wall-to-wall look, and it is made by hand in the USA in any size. A headboard that wide takes the full king formula and stays balanced with three squares. On a bed like this, keep the pillows in the same color family as the headboard and let texture do the work.
A tufted headboard is already a pattern. The Atelier Custom Modern Platform Bed, from $4,199, wraps a grid-tufted headboard and a deep tufted platform in soft cream. Against tufting, use smooth or finely woven pillows rather than more tufted ones. The Seda Ivory Diamond Weave Pillow, from $149, has a soft sheen that reads well against cream, and a velvet like the Velluto Midnight Cotton Velvet Pillow, from $129, adds depth without competing with the grid.
A low platform bed needs a lower stack. If the headboard rises only a little above the mattress, use the minimal version or two squares at most. You can browse every frame in our beds collection to compare headboard styles before you plan the layers.
Texture and Color in a South Florida Bedroom
South Florida bedrooms get a lot of light. In a high-rise in Fort Lauderdale or a home in Parkland with western windows, afternoon sun can wash out pale colors and fade dark ones, so choose with the light in mind and rotate pillows from time to time.
Textures that work here
Wool, cotton velvet, corduroy and woven cotton all feel good in a cool, air-conditioned bedroom and give a neutral bed depth. Fringe stripes, like the Ola Taupe and Ivory Fringe Stripe Pillow, from $159, add a tactile note that photographs well. A flat-woven jute and wool kilim, such as the Mesa Rust and Ivory Kilim Pillow, from $139, brings warmth next to walnut nightstands. Leather accents, like the leather-strapped Cuoio Leather Strap Lumbar Pillow, from $179, add a tailored edge to a bed in a darker room.
Color that feels coastal without being literal
You do not need shells and anchors to make a bedroom in Highland Beach feel connected to the water. One teal or blue pillow is enough. The Lago Teal Washed Velvet Pillow, from $139, has a softly frayed edge that keeps it relaxed. Pair it with ivory and charcoal and it reads as modern, not themed.
Finishing the Room: Art Above, Rug Below
Once the bed is dressed, two pieces finish the room. Above the bed, art should be roughly two-thirds the width of the headboard. The Ramo Black and White Framed Art Set of 2, from $499 in three sizes, is a pair of hand-painted canvases in slim matte black frames. Hung side by side, the two pieces read as one composition, and the black brushwork picks up a charcoal pillow below.
Under the bed, the rug should extend well beyond the sides so your feet land on it when you get up. The Venato Ivory and Copper Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, from $1,399, has an ivory ground traced with copper-brown veining and comes in sizes from 4 by 6 up to 12 by 15 feet, so you can size it to a king or queen. Its warm veining works with rust, taupe and charcoal pillows. You can see more options in our area rugs collection.
Bring Your Bed Question to the Showroom
Pillows are easy to change. The bed under them is not, and the only way to judge a headboard is to stand next to it, sit on the edge and lean back against it. Much of our bedroom collection is on the floor at our Boca Raton showroom, so you can see how tall a headboard really is, how a padded or tufted finish feels, and how a bed fits next to a nightstand. Call ahead if you want to check that a specific bed is on the floor.
Bring a photo of your bedroom, the wall width and your ceiling height. Our design team on the floor will help you choose the bed and then plan the pillows, art and rug with you on screen, next to the bed you are testing, so the whole room is decided in one visit. Our pillows, art and rugs are not all on display, so if you want to see a particular one, call ahead and we will tell you what we can show you. You can also send photos ahead through our contact page. Financing is available, and you can schedule white-glove delivery at the desk.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many decorative pillows should go on a king bed?
For most modern king beds, three 22-inch squares and one long lumbar in front of the sleeping pillows is the right amount. That fills the width of the bed without hiding the headboard. If the headboard is low, use fewer.
What size pillows go on a queen bed?
On a queen, use two 20-inch squares and one lumbar around 12 by 30 or 14 by 22 inches, in front of two queen or standard sleeping pillows. Three squares tend to crowd a queen.
Should decorative pillows be taller than the headboard?
No. The top of the arrangement should sit a few inches below the top of the headboard so the bed's design stays visible. Measure the headboard height above the mattress before you choose pillow sizes.
Where can I buy modern beds and decorative pillows in Boca Raton?
SoBe Furniture at 6599 N Federal Highway in Boca Raton carries modern and custom platform beds, and our pillow collection has 79 designs, each with a down insert. Our design team can help you choose the bed and plan the pillows, art and rug in one visit.
Where can I see modern beds in person near Boca Raton?
Much of our bedroom collection is on the floor at our Boca Raton showroom, where you can see headboard heights and finishes up close. Call (561) 221-6111 before you visit to check whether a specific bed is on the floor. Pillows, art and rugs are not all on display, so ask ahead about any particular piece.
What pillow textures work best in a Florida bedroom?
Wool, cotton velvet, corduroy and woven cotton work well in air-conditioned bedrooms and add depth to neutral bedding. Mix at least two textures, and check each cover's care label, since some are machine washable and others are spot clean or dry clean only.
