Viscose or Wool? Choosing a Carved Area Rug for a South Florida Home

By Thais Monteiro, Brazilian Lifestyle and Warm Modern Design Contributor at SoBe Furniture

A client in Delray Beach sent me a photo last spring that I still think about. She had a beautiful carved rug with a soft, silky glow, the kind that catches the afternoon light and makes a living room feel finished. She had put it at the sliding door to the pool. Three months of wet feet, sandy flip-flops and a dog shaking off after a swim, and the pile near the door had flattened and browned while the far end still looked new.

This happens more than people think in South Florida. We live with humidity most of the year, open doors to the lanai, wet towels, tracked-in sand and air conditioning running day and night. A rug that would last for decades in a dry climate can struggle here if it is placed without thinking about what it is made of. And because a good rug is a real investment, the mistake hurts.

So when people ask me whether to choose viscose or wool for a carved rug, my honest answer is that both are lovely, and the decision is really about the room. Here is how I think it through, using two of our rugs as examples: Rilievo, which is viscose, and Frammento, which is wool.

Why Fiber Matters More Than Pattern in a Florida Home

Most people shop for rugs by color and pattern first. I understand it. The pattern is what you see in the photo. But in a carved rug, the fiber decides how the pattern looks a year from now.

Carving works by cutting the pile at different heights so the design reads as texture, not only as color. That raised edge is what makes a carved rug feel special underfoot and in raking light. It is also the part that wears first if the fiber is not suited to the traffic. When the high points flatten, the carving loses its shadow and the rug starts to look tired.

A Simple Framework: Sheen, Strength, Placement and Size

Sheen: how much glow do you want?

Viscose has a soft, lustrous sheen that shifts with the light. The Rilievo description says it best: the pile has a glow that changes as you walk around it. In a formal living room or a bedroom with good morning light, that sheen is the whole point. Wool has a more matte, natural look. It is warm and quiet, and it lets the color and the carving do the talking rather than the shine.

Strength: how hard will this rug work?

This is where wool earns its reputation. Frammento is hand-tufted wool with a plush pile between half an inch and an inch deep, and it is described as durable enough for everyday living. Viscose is different. It is best kept dry, and we recommend it for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms rather than entryways or kitchens. That is not a flaw. It is just the nature of the fiber, and respecting it is how you keep a viscose rug looking beautiful.

Placement: what happens in that spot every day?

I ask three practical questions. Does anyone walk on it with wet feet? Is there food or drink nearby every day? Do pets or kids use it as a play zone? If the answer to the first one is yes, I steer away from viscose. If the room is a quiet sitting area or a bedroom, viscose is a wonderful choice.

Pile height: what sits on top of it?

Rilievo has a low pile, about half an inch deep, which sits flat under dining chairs and coffee tables. That matters more than people expect. A chair that rocks on a deep pile is annoying every single meal. Frammento's deeper, plush pile is softer to stand on and feels wonderful in front of a sofa or beside a bed, where bare feet land first.

Size and shape: does the rug fit the furniture, not just the floor?

Both lines come in a generous range. Rilievo Sage Gray runs from 3' x 5' up to 12' x 15', plus runners in 2'6" x 8', 2'6" x 10' and 3' x 12', squares in 8' x 8' and 10' x 10', and an 8' x 8' round. Frammento comes from 4' x 6' to 10' x 14', with a 2'6" x 8' runner and 8' x 8' and 10' x 10' squares. Custom sizes can also be quoted on both.

Where Viscose Belongs: Rilievo in Sage Gray and Golden Beige

Rilievo is a rug I love for calm rooms. Fine carved lines step outward from the center in a large diamond, so from across the room it reads as quiet texture, and up close it becomes crisp geometry. It is hand-tufted in India from viscose, and it comes in two colorways.

The Rilievo Sage Gray Geometric Rug is sage gray, soft gray and ivory. I picture it in a Highland Beach condo with white walls and the ocean outside, where cool tones keep the room fresh. It also works beautifully with gray or greige upholstery and pale oak.

The Rilievo Golden Beige Geometric Rug is golden beige, honey and ivory, and it glows in daylight. This is the one I reach for in warmer rooms, with cognac leather, walnut and brass. In a Parkland family room that faces west, the honey tones look rich at sunset instead of washed out. The Golden Beige comes in 3' x 5' through 12' x 15', plus 2'6" x 8' and 2'6" x 10' runners.

Both Rilievo rugs start at $499. The care instructions are clear: spot clean only, keep dry, and use a non-slip rug pad underneath.

Where Wool Shines: Frammento for Real Family Living

The Frammento Sky Blue and Navy Abstract Rug is the opposite personality. Large broken shapes in sky blue and deep navy, divided by bands of ivory, give it a bold, modern-art feel. It is hand-tufted wool with a cut-and-loop pile, hand-carved along the edges of each shape so the colors sit at slightly different heights.

That cut-and-loop construction is part of why it handles a busy room well. The texture hides footprints, and the deeper pile feels soft when you sit on the floor with the kids or stretch out during a game. Frammento also starts at $499, and its care is spot clean only with a non-slip pad underneath.

I see Frammento as an anchor. In a Boca Raton living room with an ivory sectional, the navy pulls the room together and the sky blue picks up the color of the water outside.

Runners, Squares and Rounds: Sizing for South Florida Floor Plans

South Florida homes have their own shapes. Long hallways in Boca Bridges, square breakfast nooks in older Boca Raton homes, open great rooms in Lotus where the sofa floats in the middle of the space. A standard rectangle is not always the answer.

Runners are for hallways and the side of a bed. A 2'6" x 8' runner works along one side of a queen or king. The 3' x 12' Rilievo Sage Gray runner is lovely in a long gallery hallway, as long as that hallway is not the main path from the pool. For a hall that sees wet feet, I would choose the wool Frammento runner in 2'6" x 8' instead.

Squares are underrated. An 8' x 8' or 10' x 10' square fits a square dining room or a sitting area with four chairs around a coffee table better than a rectangle ever will. Both Rilievo Sage Gray and Frammento come in squares.

My rule of thumb for a living room: the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. For a dining room, measure the table, then leave enough rug around it that chairs stay on the rug when someone pulls back to stand up.

Try a Sample Before You Commit

Rugs are one of the hardest things to choose from a screen. Sheen especially does not photograph honestly, and color shifts depending on your light. That is why I am such a fan of our samples.

An 18-inch sample of each of these rugs is available for $50, and the $50 is credited toward the rug if you order it afterward. To order a rug or a sample, call our Boca Raton showroom at (561) 221-6111. Rugs are ordered rather than kept on display, so the sample is the best way to see one in your own home.

Put the sample on the floor where the rug will go and leave it there for a few days. Look at it in the morning, at noon, and after sunset with your lamps on. Walk on it barefoot. Set a chair leg on it. With viscose, watch how the sheen moves as you walk past. With wool, feel the depth of the carving with your hand. You will know quickly which one belongs in the room.

You can browse the full range on our area rugs collection page and narrow the list before you call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is viscose or wool better for a rug in a humid Florida home?

Both can work, but they belong in different rooms. Viscose, like our Rilievo, is best kept dry and is recommended for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Wool, like our Frammento, is durable enough for everyday living and is the safer choice in busier spaces.

Can I put a viscose rug near the pool door or in the kitchen?

I would not. Viscose should stay dry, so we recommend it for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms rather than entryways or kitchens. For a spot that sees wet feet, choose a wool rug instead.

What sizes do the Rilievo and Frammento rugs come in?

Rilievo Sage Gray runs from 3' x 5' to 12' x 15', with three runners, two squares and an 8' x 8' round. Rilievo Golden Beige runs from 3' x 5' to 12' x 15' with two runners. Frammento runs from 4' x 6' to 10' x 14', with a runner and two squares. Custom sizes can be quoted.

How do I clean a carved rug?

Both Rilievo and Frammento are spot clean only, and Rilievo should be kept dry. Blot spills quickly rather than rubbing, and use a non-slip rug pad underneath to keep the rug flat and in place.

Can I get a rug sample before ordering?

Yes. An 18-inch sample is available for $50, and the $50 is credited toward the rug if you order it afterward. Call the showroom at (561) 221-6111 to order a sample or a rug.
