Every week someone sits on a sofa in our Boca Raton showroom, runs a hand along the arm, and asks me the same three questions. Will boucle hold up? Should I do linen instead? And what does performance fabric actually mean? Good questions, because in South Florida the fabric decision matters more than it does almost anywhere else in the country.

True linen is beautiful but demanding, and most people who want the linen look end up happier with a linen-style performance weave. The real differences live in how the fiber is made. The gold standard is solution-dyed fiber, where the color is part of the fiber itself rather than applied to the surface. When a salesperson anywhere tells you a fabric is performance grade, ask these questions and expect direct answers:

• Has it been abrasion tested, and how does its rating compare to the other fabrics you are considering?

The old objection to performance fabric was that it felt plastic. That era is over. Modern performance chenilles, tweeds, and linen-looks feel soft enough that customers routinely fail my blind touch test in the showroom. What to Test in the Showroom Before You Buy

Deep contemporary sofas often run larger than people expect, and a sofa that fits the room but not the service elevator helps no one. Sunscreen contains oils and active ingredients that can permanently discolor ordinary fabric, which is one more reason performance weaves earn their keep here.

What is a cleaning code and why should I care?

It is the letter on the fabric tag that tells you how the fabric may be cleaned. W means water-based cleaners, S means solvent only, S/W means either, and X means vacuum only.
