How Furniture Financing Works in Florida: A Boca Raton Buyer's Guide
By Daniela Castillo, Client Experience Lead at SoBe Furniture
Most of the buying questions I get at our Boca Raton showroom are not about fabric, finish, or delivery times. They are about money. How does furniture financing actually work? Is interest-free really interest-free? What is the catch? Should I finance at all? These are good questions, and most people are not given honest answers. The financing literature is intentionally confusing, and most online guides repeat the same vague phrasing.
So here is the plain-English version, written by someone who explains it across the desk every day at SoBe Furniture. I will tell you exactly how furniture financing in Florida works, when it is a smart move, when it is a trap, and what to look out for so the interest-free promotion stays interest-free.
What "Interest-Free Financing" Actually Means at a Furniture Store
When you finance furniture in Florida, including at our Boca Raton showroom, you are not borrowing money from the furniture store. You are getting approved for a store-branded credit card issued by a partner bank. In our case, that bank is Synchrony, and the card is the Synchrony HOME Credit Card.
The promotional offers, which is the part most shoppers care about, are tied to that card. At SoBe Furniture, the everyday promotions are:
- 6 months interest-free on qualifying purchases of $299 to $1,998.99
- 12 months interest-free on qualifying purchases of $1,999 or more
The technical name for this kind of offer is deferred interest promotional financing. That phrase matters, and I will explain why in a minute. What it means in practice is that if you pay off the promotional balance in full within the promotional period, and you make the minimum monthly payments along the way, you pay zero interest. The furniture costs what the price tag said it would.
The One Rule That Keeps Interest-Free Truly Interest-Free
Here is the part the fine print buries and that I always make sure clients understand at the showroom: deferred interest is not the same as 0 percent APR.
With true 0 percent APR financing, interest does not accrue at all during the promotional period. If you carry a balance into month 13, you start paying interest from month 13 forward, but the previous twelve months stay interest-free.
With deferred interest financing, interest is quietly accruing in the background the whole time. If you pay off the full balance by the end of month 12, all of that accrued interest is forgiven. If you do not, you owe every penny of it, calculated back to the day you bought the furniture.
This is why it is critical to do two things:
- Pay off the entire promotional balance before the promotional period ends, not just the minimum.
- Make every minimum monthly payment on time. Missing payments can sometimes terminate the promotion.
If you follow those two rules, deferred interest financing is one of the best deals you can use. If you do not, the same card that looked like 0 percent suddenly looks like 26 percent or more, applied retroactively. The system is not designed to be hostile, but it is designed to assume you will pay attention.
When Financing Furniture Is a Smart Move
I am not going to give you a one-size-fits-all answer about whether to finance furniture. I will give you the framework I use with clients at SoBe.
Financing is a smart move when:
- You have the money to buy the furniture outright but you would rather keep that cash liquid for emergencies, investments, or upcoming expenses.
- You are furnishing a larger purchase, like a sectional plus dining set plus bedroom, and want to break the spending across several months without tapping savings.
- You can confidently pay off the balance within the 6 or 12 month promotional period without straining your budget.
- You want to build your credit history with on-time payments on a major purchase.
Financing is not a smart move when:
- You can only afford the minimum monthly payment. That almost guarantees you will not pay off the balance by the end of the promotional period, and you will get hit with retroactive interest.
- You are using financing to stretch into a purchase you cannot actually afford. Furniture is not the place to overextend.
- You already carry significant balances on other deferred interest cards. Stacking them is risky.
If you are unsure, here is a clean rule of thumb. Take the total purchase price and divide it by the months in your promotional period. If you can comfortably afford that monthly amount, you can comfortably finance the purchase interest-free.
Sales Tax in Florida: A Small Detail Worth Knowing
In Florida, furniture is subject to state sales tax, currently six percent, plus any local surtax. In Palm Beach County, that adds one percent for a total of seven percent. So a $2,000 sofa is really a $2,140 sofa once tax is added.
That matters for financing in a specific way: sales tax counts toward your purchase total. If you are right at the edge of the $1,999 threshold for the 12 month promotion, the tax pushes you over. If you are buying a $1,900 piece, talk to the associate. Sometimes you can add a small accessory, like a side table or a lamp, that brings you above the threshold and earns you an extra six months of interest-free financing on the full balance.
What You Can Use the Card For Beyond SoBe
One of the underrated benefits of the Synchrony HOME Credit Card is that it is not limited to SoBe Furniture. It is accepted at thousands of home-related merchants across the United States. That means once you are approved, you can use the same card for appliances, flooring, mattresses, lighting, custom closets, paint, or anything else home-related, often with similar promotional financing offers.
For a Boca Raton homeowner who is mid-renovation or just moved in, that flexibility is meaningful. You apply once and have a financing tool that covers most of the home spending you will do over the next year or two.
How to Apply at SoBe Furniture
The application takes about two minutes. You can do it from a tablet at our showroom while you are picking out furniture, or before you come in. You will need:
- Your Social Security number
- Your date of birth
- Your address and contact information
- Your annual household income
Synchrony Bank makes the credit decision, not SoBe. Most decisions are instant. If you are approved on the spot, you can use the card the same day for your purchase. If you need a paper card mailed for future purchases, that arrives in about a week, but for today's purchase you are good to go.
You can read all the details and start an application at our furniture financing page.
What to Avoid in the Fine Print
Not every furniture financing offer is created equal. When you see promotional financing advertised at another store, here are the things I tell people to check before signing.
Is it deferred interest or true 0 percent APR? Most furniture promotions are deferred interest. That is fine if you pay it off in time, but you need to know what you are signing.
What is the minimum monthly payment formula? Some cards calculate the minimum so low that you will not naturally pay off the balance within the promotional period. You have to set your own payment.
What is the post-promotional APR? Standard purchase APRs on store credit cards range from 26 percent to 32 percent. That is what you will pay if you do not pay off the balance in time.
Are there any prepayment penalties? Generally no, but verify. You should always be able to pay off the balance early without a penalty.
What happens if you miss a payment? Some promotional offers terminate after a single late payment, retroactively charging the deferred interest. Others are more forgiving. Read this section.
A Short Note on Cash Discounts
One question I get often: should I ask for a cash discount instead of financing? The honest answer is that most furniture stores in Florida, including SoBe, are priced consistently whether you pay cash or finance. The merchant absorbs the cost of the financing promotion, not you. So you are not losing money by using interest-free financing.
What you can ask for, regardless of payment method, is a designer consultation, white-glove delivery and assembly, and help spec'ing the room. Those are real value-adds, and at SoBe they are part of how we work.
Furnishing a Whole Home, Not Just a Room
Where furniture financing really shines is in larger projects. Furnishing an entire Boca Raton home from scratch typically runs $25,000 to $80,000 once you include sofas, sectionals, dining, bedroom, office, decor, lighting, and rugs. That is not a check most people want to write at once, even if they can.
By breaking the purchase across the 12 month promotional period, you turn it into a manageable monthly payment without interest. You can also stagger deliveries across that window so the house comes together gradually rather than overwhelming you with movers in one weekend.
This is a common pattern for people moving from New York, Chicago, or the New England area into a new home in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, or Boynton Beach. If that is you, our designers can help you spec the rooms together so you get the design right the first time. Schedule a complimentary in-home design consultation and we will come to you.
The Short Version
Furniture financing in Florida is genuinely useful when you understand the rules. The Synchrony HOME Credit Card we use at SoBe Furniture offers real interest-free financing on qualifying purchases of $299 and up, for 6 or 12 months depending on the amount. Pay off the promotional balance in full and on time, and the furniture costs exactly what the price tag says.
